Wales CIEH Noise Survey 2020/21

The COVID -19 pandemic has had a profound impact on the way we live our lives and in 2020, on the advice of government,  a significant proportion of the population moved to homeworking. Home schooling and study became the norm, and much of the hospitality/entertainment sector closed with lockdown.

This survey will provide some insight into the impact of these lifestyle changes on the number of noise complaints reported to local authorities and enforcement activity relating to noise during this period. The data from the survey will be used to highlight the vital work of environmental health professionals in dealing with noise.

Why is the CIEH noise survey important?

Our noise survey provides the only source of regular national information on the important contribution made by environmental health professionals working to resolve noise complaints.

How you can help

We encourage all local authorities in Wales to participate in the survey and submit data for the period 1 April 2020 to 31 March 2021 by 9 May 2022.

In 2019/20 all local authorities in Wales participated in the survey. The report is available here

Is only Wales data collected?

Whilst this survey is confined to Wales, CIEH collects data separately for England. We do not collect data for Northern Ireland and Scotland as they have their own data collections systems in place, led by the devolved administrations there.
